We can't afford (not) to be artists

In an age of relentless productivity, our lives are dictated by the demand to produce, optimize, and contribute in the economic arena. This pervasive ideology has woven itself into the very fabric of our existence. It has shaped our values, our self-worth, and our collective aspirations. However, beneath the surface of this paradigm, we find a troubling omission—an erasure of activities and values that do not conform to an economic efficiency framework. This pervasive cultural mindset blinds us to the profound consequences of its narrow focus. In this exhibition we ask ourselves: What is sacrificed on the altar of perpetual productivity?

We built a conference of artworks that explored the classic 1970's song 'You've got to beat the clock' by Sparks. With its repetitive rythym and is process driven musical values we felt it encompassed all that we needed. the exploration was a trio of screens. An Ipad, with a static image of a hand drawn QR code. that took you to teh youtube song. A small screen with a video of a zoom call between Q and I, emulating teh repetitive rhythm of the song. lastly a screen that displayed a conversation between Q_Plus_I and ChatGPT3.5.

Project Potpourri: Artist Collectives – A Call and Response

April

We can't afford (not) to be artists

We were asked by the Potpourri team to create a spread and ask questions as a part of their publication about collaborative groups.

An art exhibition featuring the work of 5 VCAS member artists and two international Artists-in-Residence from VCAS's digital residency program, Noah Heylen (Belgium) and Catherine Bourne (Australia)..Accompanied by a dance theatre performance during the Vernissage.

We organised a stream of the MCCT conference with the theme: 'Productivity or Process: What is the Value in Making?' Our central objective for this stream was to challenge the value of outcome over process, and explore the implications of elevating the act of creation itself above any tangible end result. The stream was presented with a hybrid format, both in person and using Zoom.
